Zubats in Master Balls.

Insignificant creatures in places that were destined for greater things.

Every year I make the same types of resolutions on New Year’s Eve. “I want to diet/get skinny/be happy with myself/get self-esteem”. Of course now I sound like a whiney 12 year old bitch on Facebook, but it’s true. Body image affects everyone.

In Australia, 2011, some statistics were recorded:

  • 45 per cent of women and 23 per cent of men in the healthy weight range think they are overweight.
  • At least 20 per cent of women who are underweight think that they are overweight and are dieting to lose weight.

And in the United States:

  • 8 million people in the US suffer from anĀ eating disorder; 90% are women/girls
  • 8 out 10 women are not happy with their reflection.
  • 80% of children are afraid of being fat.
  • More than 50% of 10 year old girls wish they were thinner.
  • Americans spend more than 40 billion a year on diet and beauty products.
  • In your lifetime 50,000 people will die as a direct result of their eating disorder
  • The current media ideal of thinness is achieved by less than 5% of the female population.

Just looking at these statistics show that one person is not alone on their struggle to what they ideal as “perfection”. And this year again, I will make the same New Year’s resolution in hope that it finally works, that I won’t be called “fat” by strangers and even family members.
